Code-Conscious Flooring Installation Planning
Flooring replacement by itself does not always require a building permit. However, flooring work may be part of a larger renovation involving structural changes, stairs, fire separations, accessibility, basement finishing, underfloor heating, plumbing or other regulated construction.
Subfloor Condition
Before installation, the existing subfloor should be reviewed for damage, movement, uneven areas, loose fasteners, moisture concerns and overall suitability for the selected flooring product.
Structural Floor Changes
Floor joists, beams, blocking and structural subfloor components should not be cut, notched, removed or altered without appropriate review where structural work is involved.
